Job Summary

Under the direction of the Utility Supervisor and Utility Lead, the Utility Worker is responsible for all aspects of the operations, maintenance, and preventative maintenance of City facilities. Additionally, they must understand and follow all policies, procedures, and safety aspects of public works systems. The following gives an example of some of their duties:

  • Install water systems, conduct operations and maintenance procedures including, but not limited to water mains, services, fire hydrants, meters, valves, control valves, pumps, chlorination systems, reservoirs, etc.
  • Install sanitary and storm sewer systems, operation and maintenance procedures including, but not limited to, mains and interceptors, services manholes, catch basins and cleanouts, etc.
  • Complete roads and street construction, operation and maintenance procedures including, but not limited to, concrete and asphalt pavements, curbs, gutters, pothole and crack repair, sweeping aggregate surface, blading, shoulders, roadsides, signs, lights and traffic signals.
  • Reads meters and maintains the area around meters and assure meter boxes are clean of dirt, debris and water.

This is a full-time, full-benefits position. Benefits include medical, dental, vision. Retirement under the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and vacation, sick leave, holidays, and personal days are all available for this position.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), required
  • Two (2) years progressively responsible experience in water systems, storm systems, operation and maintenance of roads and streets, and/or pothole and crack repair, sweeping, meter reading, and general city maintenance
  • Two (2) years working in similar field without direct supervision
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment including backhoe and street cleaning.

Preferred Knowledge and/or Experience:

  • Experience working for governmental organizations or a municipality
  • Experience working in street repair and construction
  • Advanced knowledge of sanitary systems

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Washington State Drivers License, required
  • Class A CDL Endorsement: must maintain insurable driving record, or be able to obtain one within two (2) years of employment
  • Flagger card or ability to obtain one within two (2) years of employment
  • First Aid/CPR certificate or ability to obtain one within two (2) years of employment

Special Requirements:

The City of Selah is required by federal regulations to administer a testing program for controlled substance and alcohol use for employees to have and maintain a CDL. This position is covered under the City of Selah Substance Abuse Testing Policy.

Employees must be able to respond within 30 minutes during emergencies.
