Public Records Exemptions and Appeals

Based on the nature of the request and applicable RCW statutes, a Public Records Request may be partially or fully denied. RCW 42.56 lists reasons for exemption of information to the public. Additional information can be found at the Municpal Research and Services Center (MRSC) website, specifically in Appendix C.

A requestor who objects to the denial or partial denial of their request may petition in writing to the Public Records Officer for a review of the decision. Upon receipt of the petition, the Public Records Officer will promptly provide the petition and other relevant information to the City Attorney or his/her designee. The City Attorney or his/her designee will affirm or reverse the denial within five business days.

Please email your appeal directly to the Public Records Officer. You must include the Public Records Request number associated with your request.
