Evans Canyon Fire

Summary

The Evans Canyon fire began Monday afternoon (8/31) on the south slopes of the Wenas Creek drainage and burned mainly southeastward due to breezy northwest winds threatening homes. The fire continued a general easterly path on 9/1 and spread into Kittitas County within the Umtanum Creek drainage heading toward the Yakima River Canyon. Kittitas County also issued evacuations for the easterly slopes of the Yakima River Canyon and Yakima and Kittitas Counties closed the River to recreational activities (i.e. no camping or boat traffic) from near the Umtanum foot bridge down to the Wenas Creek/Yakima River confluence. *This information was provided by Yakima Valley Emergency Management.

Department of Natural Resources has assumed command of the fire from the Selah Fire Department.

Assistance

The Red Cross is currently at Selah Middle School to assist with lodging and other needs for those who have been evacuated. They can also be reached at (509) 594-0016. If you wish to provide help to those who have been evacuated, please contact the Red Cross directly.

Evacuees with farm animals and RVs can go to the State Fair Park located at 1301 S. Fair Ave. in Yakima. Please call (509) 574-1919 for further information on use of those facilities.
